Susan’s life changed suddenly after a heart attack caused her to lose consciousness and fall, striking her head on a tile floor. The impact led to swelling in her spinal cord, resulting in quadriplegia and a complete shift in how she lives her daily life.

Today, Susan requires assistance with nearly every task. Before her injury, she worked part-time from home, running a business that relied on the use of her hands. Since her injury, she has been forced to step away from that work, losing not only her livelihood but also an important part of her independence.

Simple, everyday routines have become significant challenges. One of the most essential needs — the ability to bathe safely — was no longer possible without the right support.

Through the Cal Rehab Foundation’s Enabling Independence Program, Susan received a reclining shower chair, recommended by her therapist, designed to meet her current physical needs. This specialized chair provides proper positioning, stability, and support, allowing her to shower safely in her own home.
