Enabling Independence Program

On August 10, 2024, Savannah’s life changed in an instant. She was riding as a passenger on a motorcycle when the driver fled during a police stop, accelerating to over 100 miles per hour. Unable to get off the motorcycle when she tried, Savannah had no involvement in what unfolded — yet she endured the consequences. The crash resulted in the traumatic loss of her left leg above the knee, along with multiple life-threatening injuries. Since that day, she has undergone 28 surgeries and counting, each one part of an exhausting and courageous fight to recover.

Despite her resilience, daily life remains deeply challenging. Savannah experiences constant pain, fatigue, and limited mobility. She currently relies on crutches, but as a mother-to-be who is six months pregnant, moving around this way has become increasingly difficult. Using crutches strains her arms, heightens her pain, and increases her risk of falls — all while she is preparing to welcome a newborn.

Savannah’s therapist recommended a lightweight electric wheelchair to support her mobility, safety, and independence. This equipment would give her the ability to carry her baby securely, move around her home with less pain, and travel in her community without the exhausting limitations that come with crutches.

Through the Cal Rehab Foundation’s Enabling Independence Program, Savannah received the lightweight electric wheelchair she urgently needed.

“I’ll be able to do more things and go more places without being limited. I can carry my newborn safely, reduce my pain, and worry less about falling.”

This wheelchair is more than a piece of equipment — it is a lifeline. It gives Savannah the freedom to navigate motherhood with confidence, stability, and dignity as she rebuilds her life after unimaginable trauma.
