Megan’s Story: Restoring Freedom, One Journey at a Time

Megan’s journey has been marked by extraordinary resilience. After years of accidents and trauma that caused significant damage to her spine, she was told in 2023 that a single surgery would restore her mobility. Instead, she has endured three spinal surgeries, each bringing new challenges. Today, Megan is fully dependent on a power wheelchair and faces a reality far different from the active life she once knew.

Her injury affects nearly every aspect of daily living. Tasks many people take for granted, such as dressing, bathing, cooking, and cleaning, now require additional effort and support. Chronic pain, respiratory complications, bowel and bladder issues, pressure sores, and interrupted sleep have become part of her daily routine. The loss of mobility has also made it difficult to attend family gatherings, medical appointments, and community activities, contributing to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression.

Despite these obstacles, Megan remains determined to maintain her independence and stay connected to the people and places that matter most.

Through the Cal Rehab Foundation’s Enabling Independence Program, Megan received a grant for a swing-away power wheelchair hitch-mount lift for her vehicle. This specialized equipment allows her to transport her power wheelchair safely and independently, eliminating the need to rely on others for assistance.

Because her power wheelchair is too heavy to lift and cannot be folded for transport, the lift is essential for her mobility. With the touch of a button, Megan can load and unload her wheelchair, making it possible to travel to medical appointments, run errands, spend time with family, and participate more fully in her community.

“This lift gives me the freedom to go where I need to go without depending on someone else. It helps me reclaim a part of my independence.”

For Megan, this grant is about more than transportation. It is about restoring confidence, reducing barriers, and opening the door to a more connected and fulfilling life.
