Enabling Independence Program

On April 27, 2021, Mark’s life changed dramatically after a serious accident while climbing into his truck. An icy step bar caused him to fall, resulting in a compound fracture that ultimately led to the amputation of his right leg below the knee. Over time, additional complications arose. Years of limited mobility caused severe deformity in his remaining leg, leaving him completely non-weight bearing and unable to stand.

Mark lives with advanced joint degeneration, chronic wounds, and diabetes, which has led to frequent hospitalizations for infections over the past several years. Because of ongoing soft tissue wounds and a high risk of infection, reconstructive surgeries that might restore mobility are no longer a safe option.

A dedicated teacher for 27 years, Mark has spent the last four years navigating a life that feels increasingly confined. To work or go anywhere at all, he must rely on others to unload and reload his power wheelchair from his truck. The lack of independence has taken a toll on his quality of life and has even created challenges in the workplace, where accommodations are not always readily available.

Through the Cal Rehab Foundation’s Enabling Independence Program, Mark was awarded a grant for an electric transfer seat installed in a handicap-accessible van. This life-changing equipment allows him to transfer safely, drive independently, and travel without needing assistance to manage his wheelchair.

“With this seat installed, I get back something I lost four years ago. My freedom and independence. I can go to work, run errands, and live my life without depending on someone else.”

For Mark, this grant represents more than transportation. It restores dignity, autonomy, and the ability to fully participate in everyday life. Your support makes stories like Mark’s possible.
