Giancarlos, a 51-year-old man, experienced a life-altering injury on March 20, 2022, after sustaining multiple traumatic injuries from a fall. His injuries were extensive and complex, including spinal cord and spinal column trauma, fractures throughout his spine and lower extremities, head and chest injuries, and internal complications that required multiple surgeries and long-term rehabilitation.

As a result of these injuries, Giancarlos’s daily life has been profoundly affected. He relies on a wheelchair for mobility and is unable to stand safely or independently for more than brief moments. Standing without the use of his hands is not possible, and the physical strain of prolonged sitting has led to increased tightness, pain, and spasticity.

To support his recovery and independence, Giancarlos was awarded a grant through the Cal Rehab Foundation’s Enabling Independence Program for an Evolv Stander, a specialized standing frame designed to provide safe, supported standing.

The Evolv Stander allows Giancarlos to stand for extended periods with stability and confidence, reducing his risk of falls while helping to alleviate pain, decrease muscle spasticity, and support overall physical health. Regular standing also plays a critical role in maintaining bone density and improving circulation, both essential for long-term mobility and wellness.

For Giancarlos, the ability to stand safely represents more than a therapeutic benefit. It is a powerful step toward restoring strength, confidence, and independence in his daily life.
