Enabling Independence Program
On March 7, 2014, Denisha’s life changed forever when she was struck by a stray bullet. The injury left her partially paralyzed, with only a one percent chance of walking again. Despite the gravity of her injury, Denisha has continued to move forward with determination, strength, and an unwavering desire to live fully.
In her daily life, Denisha relies on a manual wheelchair for mobility while also managing chronic pain and incontinence. Even with these challenges, she remains active, independent, and deeply engaged in her community.
After recently moving into her own apartment in downtown Los Angeles, Denisha’s wheelchair became her primary mode of transportation due to limited street parking. She loves being out and exploring her city, attending music festivals, and staying socially connected. However, the physical demands of pushing her wheelchair long distances and up steep ramps often led to fatigue and made her hesitant to ask for help.
Through the Cal Rehab Foundation’s Enabling Independence Program, Denisha received a Scout wheelchair attachment from U2 Mobility, giving her added power, endurance, and freedom of movement.
With this attachment, Denisha can travel farther with less strain, navigate challenging terrain more easily, and stay independent throughout her busy days. It allows her to move across campus, enjoy events, and even make a quick trip to the taco truck without exhausting herself.
“I love being out and about, and this gives me the freedom to go where I want without worrying about fatigue or having to ask for help.”
For Denisha, this equipment means more energy, confidence, and the ability to fully participate in life on her own terms.
