Enabling Independence Program
Christy, a 51-year-old woman, is living with a progressive neurological condition diagnosed as multiple system atrophy (MSA), a form of Parkinsonism. Diagnosed four years ago, her condition has led to ongoing decline, including cerebellar deficits, autonomic dysfunction, and limited response to medication.
As her condition has progressed, everyday activities have become increasingly difficult and unsafe. Christy has experienced multiple falls while using a standard commode and transport wheelchair, creating serious risks within her own home. Maintaining balance and stability has become a constant challenge, requiring hands-on support from caregivers for even the most basic daily needs.
To improve her safety and quality of life, Christy was evaluated for specialized equipment that could better support her condition. Through the Cal Rehab Foundation’s Enabling Independence Program, she received a rolling, tilting shower and commode chair, along with financial assistance toward her ultra-lightweight manual wheelchair.
This specialized chair provides critical stability and positioning support, helping to prevent falls during bathing and toileting. The tilt function allows for safer transfers and improved comfort, while also reducing physical strain on her caregivers.
For Christy, this equipment is not just about convenience. It is about safety, dignity, and the ability to remain at home with greater confidence and care.
