Enabling Independence Program

Catiya sustained a spinal cord injury on May 17, 2018, resulting in complete paraplegia. Despite the life-changing nature of her injury, she has never allowed it to define or limit her determination. From the beginning of her recovery, Catiya has focused on caring for herself and providing a stable, loving life for her son.

As a single mother to a child with special needs, independence is essential. While navigating daily responsibilities can be challenging at times, Catiya continues to move forward with faith, resilience, and strength. Transportation plays a critical role in her ability to care for her family, attend appointments, and stay connected to her community.

Through the Cal Rehab Foundation’s Enabling Independence Program, Catiya received a grant for hand controls for her vehicle, allowing her to drive safely without the use of foot pedals. This adaptive equipment gives her the freedom to transport her son to school, medical appointments, and everyday activities without relying on others.

“Being able to drive keeps my independence and allows me to take care of my son. That is my main priority.”

For Catiya, hand controls are more than a driving aid. They are a vital tool that supports independence, stability, and the ability to be present for her family every day.
