Enabling Independence Program
My name is Casey McGinnis. I am 38 years old. On September 06, 2024, I suffered a severe stroke during surgery while removing a brain tumor. I spent six weeks in a critical rehabilitation hospital. I was released to the care of parents where I now reside. I have left sided weakness. A droop in my smile, no use of my left arm and hand. Slight movement in left leg. Each week I am improving. My goals are to keep improving and working hard at physical and occupational therapies. I am hoping one day to beable to walk with no assistance.
After moving in with my parents, we all realized that their home was not safe for me. Two story home with no downstairs bedroom or full bathroom. Doorways not able to allow my wheelchair through.
This is where The California Rehabilitation Institute Foundation has come to our rescue. With your scholarship, we have been able to make renovations to the downstairs area making it a safer place for me. It has allowed me to be more independent. To move around in my wheel chair with little help. The most significant change is building an ADA compliant bathroom downstairs with a shower to accommodate a roll in chair. Placing bars strategically around the house for walking and standing support. Widening all the door ways to easy passage.
Having all these changes, has made a difference. Emotionally, I am slowly getting my dignity back. I am able to use the restroom and to shower with little help. These things might seem small to most people, but not being able to take care of my personal needs, was as devastating as the injury itself. Having to rely on family for every little aspect of life was very hard. Now, I see hope!
To the California Rehabilitation Institute Foundation. THANK YOU!
