Frank’s Story: Restoring Dignity

On June 19, 2006, Frank’s life changed forever when he sustained a spinal cord injury from a gunshot wound while helping a friend in need. The injury left him a C4-C5 quadriplegic and significantly changed the way he lives each day.

Today, everyday activities such as getting dressed, showering, brushing his teeth, and managing personal care require assistance from a caregiver. Frank also lives with ongoing nerve pain, depression, and anxiety, making each day a challenge.

Before receiving support from the California Rehabilitation Foundation, bathing was especially difficult. Frank was being bathed in his backyard using a hose, with his caregiver heating water in a bucket. When the water became cold, there was little choice but to continue. What should have been a basic part of daily life had become an uncomfortable and undignified experience.

Through the Enabling Independence Program, the California Rehabilitation Foundation provided Frank with a $4,400 grant for a shower bag, giving him a safe and accessible way to bathe at home.

For Frank, the impact goes far beyond having a new piece of equipment. It means being able to bathe again with comfort, privacy, and dignity.

And he loves it.

The California Rehabilitation Foundation is proud to help provide solutions that restore more than independence. They restore dignity, comfort, and hope.
