Peter’s Story: Rebuilding Strength, One Step at a Time
On January 5, Peter suffered a large hemorrhagic stroke that changed his life in an instant. The following day, he underwent a craniotomy to relieve pressure from the bleed. In the aftermath, Peter lost function across the entire left side of his body and now faces significant neurological and physical challenges as he begins his recovery.
Today, Peter is working through an intensive rehabilitation program, but his daily life has been profoundly impacted. He is currently unable to sit up independently, walk, or use his left arm. Tasks that were once routine, such as eating, speaking clearly, and processing information, now require immense effort. He also experiences vision loss on his left side, frequent dizziness, fatigue, and ongoing pain.
Despite these obstacles, Peter remains committed to his recovery and is focused on regaining as much independence as possible.
Through the Cal Rehab Foundation’s Enabling Independence Program, Peter received a grant for a custom ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) for his left leg. This specialized brace is designed to stabilize his leg, prevent his knee from buckling, and support safe standing and walking as he progresses through rehabilitation.
The AFO plays a critical role during this early stage of recovery, when gains can be most significant. It helps protect Peter from falls, supports proper movement, and allows him to actively work toward regaining mobility and strength.
In addition, mobility support such as a wheelchair enables Peter to safely leave his bed, engage with the world around him, and reconnect with his community. From attending church services to spending time outdoors, these moments are essential to his emotional and mental well-being.
For Peter, this support is about more than equipment. It is about creating a pathway forward — one that leads to greater independence, connection, and hope.
